Should You Lower the Temperature Even More for Holiday Dinners?

Family Holiday Dinner
|

Your holiday dinners can get a bit crowded, but that’s why you love them!
You have a huge family, and you wouldn’t trade that family-holiday-dinner-pic for the world, but you also want to make sure that everyone is comfortable this holiday season.

If you are hosting a big family dinner this holiday season, you may have some questions about your air conditioning system. We want to answer them, but first we will give you a little bit of information about your AC system so that you can make smarter choices for your home, family, and budget.

Lowering the thermostat won’t cool the home any faster

When the house is particularly hot, you hope the air conditioner can cool it down quickly. You might turn it down a few degrees, or even 10° lower than you’d like, just to give it an extra push.

But when your AC system is attempting to cool your home, it can only move at one speed.

When you lower the thermostat settings to an extreme temperature, your comfort system simply runs for longer, cooling the home past the point of comfort, using excess energy, and wearing down the parts of the air conditioner.

Our recommendation: Choose a temperature and stick with it

We strongly recommend that you find an efficient, comfortable temperature and stick with it.

We know that cooking in a home with a lot of people produces a lot of heat. But if you have the thermostat set to 77°, the air conditioner is going to run until it reaches that temperature. It should not suddenly stop cooling unless something is wrong (and turning down the thermostat won’t fix this).

Instead…

  • Use a programmable thermostat to set the thermostat to an efficient, comfortable temperature for everyone—perhaps 77° or 78°.
  • Educate family members about the thermostat, and let them know that constant readjustments don’t help the AC system to cool, and will only wear it down.
  • Schedule a maintenance session with a trained air conditioning technician if you’re worried about how well your air conditioner will perform this season. In fact, we recommend you do this twice a year every year—no matter what.
