Keep Your Pets Cool this Summer Too!

Summer can be tough for a dog, who’s covered in fur from head to tail and can become overheated more easily than you might think—and it’s tough on cats and other pets as well.

General Tips for Pets and Extreme Heat

In general, it’s important to be aware that the heat affects your pet just as it affects you. It might affect your pet in a different way, and some animals actually enjoy the warmth, but it affects their bodies nonetheless. Some basic tips for pet safety and comfort in the heat:

• Never leave a pet in an enclosed vehicle in the heat.
• Do not leave your pets outside all day.
• Consider grooming your dog for a lighter fur coat for summer.
• Know the signs of heat exhaustion. Heavy panting and lethargic behavior could be signs of a problem.
• If you have an air conditioner, use it. Remember your pets when you leave the home for a day trip or for work, and reconsider shutting off the AC completely.
• Have a vet’s number available at all times and call right away if you think your pet may be suffering from heat exhaustion.

Outdoor Tips for Dogs and Cats

• If your dog seems anxious about being stuck inside, let him test the weather for himself. He’s likely to instinctually see that it’s important to go back inside.

Food, Water, and Shelter

As always, it’s important to ensure your pet always has access to food and water, but be sure to keep extra water around in the heat, including on walks. Consider giving your pet an ice cube or refrigerated water and cooler foods. For small animals like rabbits, vegetables can help naturally hydrate.
